DHS said Mamdani rejected Trump’s offer to transfer Belgal to NYPD custody. ICE moved Belgal to detention outside New York, citing his criminal history and flight risk, and Mullin declined to disclose his location. A federal judge on Friday blocked his deportation and restricted further transfers while his challenge to detention is pending, but did not order his release.
Belgal, 28, suffered a neck wound during Thursday’s arrest attempt in Marble Hill. City officials said an ICE officer fired at least seven rounds into his car while his 5-year-old son sat in the back seat; the boy was unharmed. Federal officials alleged Belgal rammed two ICE vehicles and accelerated toward officers. Mamdani demanded an end to ICE enforcement in the city, a request Mullin rejected. The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are investigating the shooting.
