An ICE official alleged that Belgal refused orders to leave his car, struck two ICE vehicles and then accelerated toward other officers, prompting them to fire because they believed lives were in danger. City officials said an officer fired at least seven rounds during Thursday's arrest attempt in Marble Hill, wounding Belgal while the boy remained physically unharmed. DHS said the shooting remains under investigation.
The NYPD released body camera footage Friday from officers who arrived after the shooting and transported Belgal to a hospital. Hochul and Senator Chuck Schumer called for footage of the shooting itself to be released, and Schumer demanded an independent investigation. Mullin declined to identify the secure facility outside New York where ICE moved Belgal after Mamdani's unsuccessful negotiations with President Donald Trump and Mullin for his release.
