Congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier accused Tisch of attempting to justify the shooting by recounting Oscar Belgal’s past interactions with police and said, “Commissioner Tisch must step down.” Belgal, 28, was wounded in the neck in Marble Hill on Oct. 8 while his five-year-old son sat unharmed in the car. City officials said an officer fired at least seven rounds. The NYPD did not take part in the shooting; responding city officers transported Belgal to the hospital.
President Donald Trump described his call with Mamdani about the shooting as a “very nice conversation,” adding, “This is a very bad actor and we have to take care of the bad actors.” Mamdani said two hours of talks with Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin failed to secure Belgal’s release. Mullin rejected calls to pause ICE enforcement in New York. ICE officials alleged Belgal rammed two agency vehicles and accelerated toward officers before they fired.
