This deadlock follows efforts by US President Donald Trump to pressure Ukraine into changing its leadership to secure a peace deal and to stop attacks on Russian refineries to protect a US-Russia diesel supply agreement. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has urged Washington to abandon such diesel deals in favor of new sanctions to end the conflict. Zelensky has pushed back against these pressures, stating that leaders like Trump and Elon Musk blame Ukraine for energy price hikes driven by instability in the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz.
