President Donald Trump said during a campaign rally in Dubuque, Iowa, that the conflict with Iran would be “put away” very soon, stating that the resolution would happen either through a diplomatic deal or by Washington simply ending the war. Trump claimed that gasoline prices, which have risen during the military campaign, will “come plunging” once the fighting ceases.
The remarks follow efforts by former President Barack Obama to frame the conflict as an “unnecessary war” that has drained U.S. missile stocks and benefited Tehran’s strategic position. As both men campaign for the Nov 3 midterms, Trump has defended the economic cost of the hostilities, describing high fuel costs as a “small price to pay” for national security, even as analysts forecast gas prices could reach $4.20 per gallon on Election Day.
