Qatar is trying to negotiate the release of $6 billion in frozen Iranian assets under a multi-pronged proposal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz as indirect US-Iran talks entered a third consecutive day on Sunday, the Guardian reported. The diplomatic push follows more than 12 hours of Qatari mediation in Tehran on Friday and continued sessions in Doha over the weekend aimed at averting renewed US and Israeli strikes after the Nov 3 US midterm elections.
A diplomat involved in the talks told Axios that the Iranian delegation departed Doha early Sunday after Saturday’s sessions “progressed positively,” denying an account that the negotiations had stalled over Tehran’s demands on the waterway. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi separately said his deputy was returning to Tehran from Qatar on Sunday and that no direct meetings with US officials are planned, adding that a final conclusion “depends on answers to questions that have not yet been addressed.”
