A very large crude carrier is adrift and on fire after allegedly striking a naval explosive at the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz on Friday. The IRGC Navy said the supertanker, which was transporting more than 2M barrels of crude, was the third oil ship to encounter mines in the strategic waterway in a single day because the vessels utilized restricted shipping lanes and disabled tracking systems.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) rejected a separate Iranian claim that its navy destroyed a U.S. military sea drone, stating that all its unmanned surface vessels in the region are accounted for. While Tehran attributes the recent tanker fires to sea mines, the U.K. Maritime Trade Operations center and Reuters identified the cause of one incident involving the Panama flagged Louise 1 as limpet mines attached to the hull by a small boat.
