China’s Foreign Ministry urged Germany and the European Union to remain objective on trade and supply chain issues following a push by Chancellor Friedrich Merz for expanded economic ties in Asia. The diplomatic response came after Merz invited Japan to support a trade alliance and advocated for the EU to fast-track a trade agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
Merz stated that the effort to strengthen relations with the ASEAN bloc is meant to complement the European Union’s current trade negotiations with Canada. The German chancellor previously emphasized that formalizing economic relations with the Southeast Asian bloc needs to occur quickly to establish firmer ties.
