Individual investors recorded their second-highest volume of net equity sales in the first 90 minutes of a trading session on Nov 5, surpassing all morning openers since records began except for a spike on Feb 27, 2020.
The surge in early selling follows a shift in trading behavior on Nov 2, when retail traders net sold an estimated $1.4B of stocks and exchange traded funds, marking only the second net-selling day for the group in 2026. Despite the recent volatility, Morgan Stanley’s Quantitative Data Services estimates the group has purchased more than $1T of US equities and ETFs so far this year.
