The identity of the cybercriminals responsible for the recent theft of billions in cryptocurrency from the Binance exchange has become a point of contention for Donald Trump, who has disputed the findings of federal law enforcement. Speaking at Mar-a-Lago, the former president said he was not convinced that North Korea was behind the attack and suggested that if the FBI’s assessment is correct, he would address the matter through direct diplomacy with Pyongyang.
The FBI has attributed the $6.3B heist, the largest of its kind in history, to a group known as TraderTraitor, which is associated with the Lazarus network. While investigators have already frozen roughly $2.85B of the assets while tracking their movement through the Ethereum blockchain, the breach has led other industry participants including Coinbase and Kraken to tighten their cold storage and security protocols.
