Brazilian stocks tumbled 17.5% in the week following President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s surprise reelection, the market’s worst weekly performance since 2020, while domestic macro hedge funds suffered losses of up to 24% on Monday as bullish bets on challenger Flávio Bolsonaro unwound.
The weeklong slide followed a Monday selloff in which foreign investors pulled R$2.8 billion from the São Paulo stock exchange, the benchmark Ibovespa dropped 13.9% after a 30 minute circuit breaker halt, and the US-listed iShares MSCI Brazil ETF sank 19.8%. The rout also erased roughly $10 billion from the fortunes of Brazil’s richest bankers and put about $6 billion in planned corporate equity offerings in doubt as 10 year government bond yields jumped nearly 275 basis points toward 16% and the real fell about 11% against the dollar.
