Brazil’s largest cryptocurrency exchange will pay for the costs of a security breach that resulted in the theft of digital assets from its systems. While Mercado Bitcoin maintains that no customers lost funds and no data was leaked, the company is reportedly absorbing a $40M loss from the incident using its own capital.
Blockchain analysis firm Arkham estimates the hacker currently holds $46M in crypto, including $8.24M in Bitcoin and $8.37M in Ether. The exchange has kept deposits and withdrawals suspended as it coordinates with authorities to track the funds, though total frozen assets tied to the breach, including 4.5M USDT and various gold tokens, have already reached $6.8M.
