A wave of selling hit companies tied to the digital asset market on Oct 30, resulting in a loss of more than $850B across the broader U.S. stock market at the open. The decline affected a wide array of crypto-linked firms, with shares in cryptocurrency miners Riot Platforms, Hut 8 and MARA each falling 9%, while CleanSpark and IREN both dropped 7% and Robinhood fell 8%.
The market volatility follows a security breach at the Binance exchange, which froze asset movements after estimating the impact of the heist at $6.3B. While bitcoin prices fell 4.65% by 9:45 a.m. ET on Thursday, the shares of the largest industry players saw steeper losses, with Coinbase and MicroStrategy dropping as much as 12.4% and 11.9% respectively. Synthetix later announced that it had recovered the SNX tokens stolen in the breach and would return them to Binance upon request.
