Moscow has specified that prospective joint energy ventures with the United States in the Arctic could focus on the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the development of new gas fields. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak stated on Tuesday that these types of cooperation are being explored, though he did not provide specific timelines or name the sites involved. The comments follow reports that President Vladimir Putin recently discussed an Alaska energy project with US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff.
The possibility of American partnerships was first raised by Putin during the Gas Exporting Countries Forum summit in Moscow, where he also called for the lifting of economic sanctions and an end to ongoing conflicts. While hinting at Arctic deals, Putin warned that attempting to shut Russia out of the international gas market would lead to rising costs for global consumers and damage the industries of countries that reject Russian energy.
