The overnight strike on the Ryazan complex, located about 200 kilometers southeast of Moscow and accounting for nearly 5% of Russia's refining throughput, followed US President Donald Trump's demand that Kyiv stop targeting oil facilities. Calling the refinery attacks a "disgrace" that only drives up global oil prices, Trump said Ukraine should pick other targets. "There's plenty of other targets. They don't have to hit refineries," Trump said.
Zelenskyy resumed the strikes Thursday after ending a three day pause, saying Russia had continued to pound Ukraine's power grid while Washington withheld early warnings of incoming ballistic missiles and throttled Starlink access. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier this week that Russia was still striking Ukraine's energy sector because the terms of Trump's announced energy truce had never been specified.
