The four largest American technology firms have expanded their spending on data centers and hardware to meet rising demand for artificial intelligence services. Combined quarterly capital expenditures from Amazon, Google, Microsoft and Meta reached a new peak of more than $200 billion, with Amazon spending roughly $77 billion, Google about $51 billion, Microsoft $39 billion and Meta $34 billion.
Amazon’s outlay was nearly $20 billion higher than analyst projections, which weighed on the company’s share price and its profit guidance for the fourth quarter. The increased spending across the group comes as they race to build out the infrastructure necessary to support cloud growth, with Amazon projecting that its AWS unit will grow by more than 40% in both 2027 and 2028.
