Democrat Leticia Gutierrez won the race for a Houston area House seat Tuesday after her opponent, Republican Alex Mealer, ended his campaign for the office. Mealer trailed Gutierrez by 16 points with 73% of the ballots counted in Texas’s 9th District, eventually announcing his defeat in person at a watch party for the winner.
The TX-09 seat was a focus of the Republican redistricting plan and was previously won by Donald Trump by 20 points in the 2024 election. The concession, which was reported by Houston Public Media, marks a flip of a district designed to be a GOP stronghold.
