The vessel hit by an unknown projectile about 40 nautical miles south of Iran’s Lavan Island on Oct 30 was the Al Mayeda, a Qatari-owned LNG tanker linked to Nakilat, according to confirmation from India. The strike occurred at approximately 18:00 UTC, hitting the ship’s port side and damaging its accommodation block, which sparked an onboard fire. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that the crew remained safe and no environmental impact was detected.
The strike is part of a recent escalation in the Persian Gulf, with at least four tankers hit between Oct 29 and Oct 30, including the Arzanah, Riti, and Louise 1. Analysts noted the attack on the Al Mayeda shifted the targeting campaign from the Strait of Hormuz further into the central Gulf. UKMTO recorded more than 30 attacks on shipping in October, marking the highest monthly total of the conflict to date.
