The top Democrat in the House officially entered the race for the chamber’s highest office on Wednesday in a letter addressed to his colleagues. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries formally launched his bid to become Speaker of the House via the “Dear Colleague” letter, positioning himself as the successor to long-time leader Nancy Pelosi.
The Democratic caucus is scheduled to hold its internal leadership elections starting at 9 a.m. on Nov 18 and ending on Nov 19. If selected by the caucus and subsequently winning the floor vote on Jan 3, the New York representative would become the first African American to serve as Speaker of the House.
