The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation has enrolled 20 financial firms, including JPMorgan, Citi and Bank of America, in its new blockchain-based system for transferring ownership of securities. The clearinghouse aims to eventually make roughly $30 trillion of assets available for tokenization through the platform, according to Managing Director Nadine Chakar. The service is now live, allowing the participating entities to conduct peer-to-peer transfers between registered wallets on a digital ledger.
The platform initially supports the minting of tokens for 34 securities, consisting of U.S. Treasuries, ETFs and selected large-cap stocks from the Russell 1000. Each token is backed 1:1 by the underlying asset held in custody by the Depository Trust Company, which continues to maintain the official records. The system currently operates on the Canton Network and a private Besu-based network, with plans to add the Stellar network and Circle’s Arc in 2027.
