This policy shift follows two strikes within 24 hours on tankers near the northern coast of Qatar and the port of Fujairah in the UAE. The attack on the supertanker Dhalkut in the Gulf of Oman, the first in that specific area in more than 6 months, caused a large oil spill. US military aircraft have patrolled the site while the USS George Washington, the only US carrier remaining in the region, is stationed 500 km from Fujairah.
