President Asif Ali Zardari suspended the PTI-led government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Sunday, removing Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and his cabinet, who were reportedly arrested. Zardari cited a failure to combat militant attacks near the Afghanistan border as the reason for appointing a federal governor for a 6 month term. Islamabad has since deployed the military and disabled phone and internet networks in Peshawar and Swabi to quell protests demanding the release of imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
