Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Sunday that the city would investigate Thursday’s shooting in Marble Hill. A federal judge on Friday barred Belgal’s deportation without another court order while his challenge to his detention is pending. The ruling did not require his release.
Belgal, 28, was wounded as an officer fired at least seven rounds into his car, city officials said. His son was physically unharmed. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said a federal officer approached with a gun drawn as Belgal was parking, and Belgal began pulling forward. ICE officials alleged he rammed two agency vehicles and accelerated toward officers before they fired. The FBI and Homeland Security Investigations are investigating.
