The cross-chain swap protocol restored trading services for Bitcoin, Ether, and Tron on Nov 3 after an emergency security freeze had suspended its operations. To lift the halt, THORChain released a software patch to address a vault vulnerability that could have enabled attackers to trigger fraudulent payments by reusing nonces following chain reorganizations. While the protocol distributed the update as a private binary to expedite the restart, some critics argued the move contradicted the platform’s permissionless design.
The network outage began Oct 31 after an Ethereum reorganization resulted in a 10 ETH double refund, which disabled swaps across 10 supported blockchains. The pause inadvertently blocked North Korean agents from laundering funds stolen from the Binance exchange, leading the FBI to request that node operators block the associated addresses. Despite these warnings, node operators voted to restart the network, which will now process a backlog of transactions linked to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
