The company’s shares dropped 10.8% on Friday, extending a downward trend that has erased 59% of SoftBank’s value since early June. The volatility follows a series of aggressive AI bets, including a $64B investment in OpenAI, funded by $40.4B in new debt acquired over the last 12 months.
The selloff was compounded by a 51% decline in the share price of Arm since June 30, which weakened the valuation of SoftBank’s asset backing. As bond prices fell and credit-default swaps rose, SoftBank reported a leverage ratio of 13%, keeping it below its internal 25% limit.
