The agreement to halve exports is based on the EU's future projections rather than current volumes, which reached roughly 500,000 cars last year. In exchange for the curbs, China will ease licensing for rare earth exports and provide the EU better access to its domestic market. European automakers including Volkswagen, Renault, and Stellantis welcomed the deal as a milestone to avoid a full-scale trade conflict. Negotiators are scheduled to reconvene in January to address price undertakings and an anti-subsidy inquiry into electric vehicles.
