The blaze ignited Friday morning in San Clemente and grew from 50 acres at noon to nearly 500 acres by the evening. The Orange County Fire Authority established evacuation shelters at the San Juan Capistrano and San Clemente community centers as hundreds of firefighters deploy ground and air resources, including CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The fire and accompanying winds have also caused power outages affecting tens of thousands of residents across the region.
