OpenAI has launched the Grid Protectors program, an initiative designed to lower the energy consumption of its upcoming AI data center campuses during periods of high demand on local power networks. The company stated it will assume all costs for electricity and the necessary grid infrastructure at these sites.
The system would be applied to OpenAI’s planned campus in Georgia, which is currently in development. While the site is projected to need 3.2GW of power, the program would allow OpenAI to cut that demand by as much as 1GW during peak strain, a reduction approximately equal to the average electricity use of 700,000 homes.
