World debt issuance hit a fresh annual peak as a surge in capital spending on artificial intelligence drove companies to raise unprecedented levels of credit. The total volume of bond sales reached $6.61 trillion, a milestone that mirrored a spike in US investment-grade debt, which climbed to $1.76 trillion to exceed the pandemic-era high of $1.75 trillion set in 2020.
The borrowing trend has been led by hyperscalers including Amazon, Meta, Alphabet and Oracle, which together issued more than $228 billion in bonds—nearly 14 times the $16.7 billion those four firms raised in 2024. BlackRock’s Rick Rieder said the scale of recent financing in debt and equity markets is without precedent, while Bank of America predicts the momentum will continue with a record $175 billion in US investment-grade issuance during November.
