QatarEnergy has extended its force majeure on liquefied natural gas exports through the end of 2026, a move that cuts off contracted shipments to Europe and Asia into the winter season. The supply shock pushed the Dutch TTF benchmark, Europe’s primary gas gauge, past the psychological threshold of €100 per megawatt-hour for the first time since December 2022. Prices reached a peak of $108.51/MWh on Oct 28 as traders reacted to the tightened availability of term supply.
The price spike comes as the EU enters its peak heating season with reserves at 74.6%, roughly 11 points below the five-year average. German gas inventories are strained further at approximately 61% of capacity. Other headwinds affecting the region include maintenance at Norway’s Åsgard field and a ban on Russian LNG imports scheduled to take effect on Jan 1, while regional inventories remain 170 TWh below their 10 year seasonal average.
