Darya Shipilova, a technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia, died overnight Oct. 1–2 after developing severe pneumonia. Nearly 200 contacts were identified, with 189 reportedly hospitalized for observation and five medical facilities reportedly under quarantine. An aluminum plant in Shelekhov introduced mandatory masks. Reports that Shipilova broke a test tube containing live plague bacteria remain unconfirmed.
Rospotrebnadzor denied a laboratory accident occurred and described the diagnosis as “pneumonia of unknown etiology.” Russian officials said post-mortem tests found no traces of plague, and no secondary plague cases have been confirmed. The US is monitoring the situation closely, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio saying it is not cause for alarm. Ashish Jha, among the experts seeking more information, said: “We don’t really have a full understanding of what was going on in this facility.”
