Darya Shipilova, 28, who worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia, died overnight Oct. 1–2 after developing severe pneumonia. Nearly 200 contacts were placed under medical observation. Russian authorities say her pneumonia was of unknown origin, testing found no pathogen linked to her work and no plague was detected among her contacts. They deny reports of a laboratory accident involving plague bacteria.
The World Health Organization assesses the international health risk as “very low.” The CDC says there is no indication of a broader threat to the US, while continuing to monitor the case. Pneumonic plague can spread through respiratory droplets during close contact and is treatable with antibiotics, particularly when recognized and treated early.
