The diplomatic tension follows a Houthi missile strike on Riyadh's airport that killed at least 13 people, the deadliest attack on a Gulf country since the start of the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi first proposed the mediation during a Sunday call with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan. Iran has since demanded an end to the air and sea blockade of Yemen, asserting that 12 years of foreign military intervention have failed to resolve the war.
