The state broadcaster of China has called for the Japanese television network TBS to stop airing its spy thriller Vivant and provide a formal apology to the Chinese people. In a statement published Oct 29, China Central Television (CCTV) denounced the network’s claim that the series is purely fictional as an “evasion,” labeling the show a “political tool” used to disparage China.
The demand for the series to be suspended follows a backlash over torture scenes that Chinese critics say reference World War II atrocities, leading Sanrio to scrap a promotional partnership with the drama. While TBS President Ryuhō Masamine maintains the work does not intend to disparage any specific country, the broadcaster has not yet pulled the series, with the 23rd episode remaining on the schedule for Nov 1.
