Election results from the current cycle have handed Democrats the top legal positions in seven states previously controlled by the Republican Party. The gains include the flipping of Republican strongholds in Texas and Georgia, as well as victories in the attorney general races in Alaska, Kansas, Iowa, Ohio, and North Carolina.
The shift ensures that Democrats now hold a majority of the nation’s state attorneys general, increasing their legal capacity to challenge the policies of the Trump administration. In Iowa, newcomer Nate Willems won the seat from incumbent Brenna Bird, returning the office to the Democratic Party after the 2022 wave ended the multi-decade tenure of Tom Miller.
