The Milwaukee County Executive defeated Republican Tom Tiffany to become the first Black governor in the history of Wisconsin. David Crowley’s win by 8.2 percentage points ensures the Democratic Party retains control of the state’s executive mansion, marking the widest victory margin for any governor in Wisconsin since 1998 and the largest for a Democrat since 1982.
The outcome follows a campaign in which Crowley briefly withdrew from the race 119 days ago and was outspent by Tiffany 2 to 1. After returning to the race and winning his primary by 3,673 votes, Crowley improved Democratic voting trends in nearly every county in the state, including a victory in Menominee by 58 percentage points.
