The International Energy Agency warned that energy reserves in Europe may hit critically low levels if conflict in the Middle East blocks the Strait of Hormuz through the winter. The agency said a prolonged closure of the shipping lane, coupled with a harsh winter, could leave European gas storage just 10% full, a level that would hinder the ability to withdraw gas quickly and drive up the cost of refilling tanks next summer.
The warnings come as Europe enters the season with its lowest storage levels in over a decade, including Germany, where reserves are less than two-thirds full. Consequently, European spot gas prices have risen 90% from a year ago, while Asian LNG prices have more than tripled to over $31/MMBtu. The IEA projects a record 3% annual decline in global LNG supply this year, citing an estimated 60 Bcm cut in supply linked to the war in Iran.
