Money managers have placed their largest bet against US natural gas prices since record-keeping for the fuel began in 2013. Hedge funds currently hold 599,731 short-only contracts across seven Henry Hub benchmarks, wagering that a “Super El Niño” will create a mild northern winter and dampen demand for furnace and power-plant fuel.
The trend occurs as US LNG exports run at record levels and data centers increase year-round consumption. In September, Henry Hub prices averaged under $3, while TTF and JKM benchmarks remained near $30.
