The arrests occurred on Sept. 20 as authorities prepared to block a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) march on Islamabad by deploying 35,000 security personnel and 1,500 shipping containers. While PTI has postponed the rally to Oct. 4 to test the government's resolve, lawyers for the Khan sisters allege that police backdated paperwork and arrested Aleema without a valid warrant. Court records from 2025 reportedly had already cleared the sisters of the 2023 riot charges currently used to justify their custody.
