The arrests followed Tuesday’s detention of movement leaders after they climbed over gates into Jantar Mantar in central New Delhi, which had lost its status as an official protest venue a day earlier. Founder Abhijeet Dipke and two other leaders had been released on Sunday after an earlier detention and pledged to continue protests.
Opposition parties and youth activists allege the revisions excluded eligible voters to benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP. The Election Commission and BJP deny wrongdoing, while election officials say the exercise targets duplicate, deceased and ineligible voters. Opposition parties are seeking Supreme Court intervention in the dispute.
