Taiwan’s National Security Council says China has stationed more than 100 naval and coast guard vessels across the Western Pacific as of Nov 3. This buildup includes the simultaneous operation of two aircraft carriers, with the Liaoning strike group positioned in the Philippine Sea and the Fujian in the South China Sea, according to Secretary-General Joseph Wu.
The regional deployment coincided with a surge in military activity near the island. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense detected 49 sorties by Chinese military aircraft in the 24 hours leading up to 6 a.m. Nov 3, with 31 of those flights crossing the median line to enter the island’s air defense identification zone. The military also tracked six warships and six official vessels operating around the island.
