The government in Taipei stated that it needs to oversee its own maritime information to counteract ongoing pressure from Beijing. The request follows a Nov 1 confrontation in which Taiwan accused the China Coast Guard of harassing commercial ships and attempting to impose what it called a “fictional jurisdiction” during patrols off the island’s eastern coast.
The latest activity is the 13th Chinese intrusion near Taiwanese-held islands this year as Beijing increases its maritime presence in the region. In response to the patrols, the Taiwanese Coast Guard deployed its own vessels to monitor the Chinese ships, while China maintains that the surrounding waters fall under its jurisdiction.
