The blaze caused the collapse of the roof and 43 meter bell tower of the 143 year old landmark, which had been a designated historic monument since 1975. Irreplaceable assets were lost in the fire, including Haviland porcelain crests and murals by three different painters. The building had previously survived both world wars and the Prussian siege before it was torched during nationwide protests against the cost of living.
