The Interior Ministry estimated Saturday's turnout at around 550,000 demonstrators nationwide, including 110,000 in Paris, while other estimates put participation as high as 800,000. Demonstrators briefly stormed city halls in Marseille and Lille, set fire to a tourism office in Lyon, and looted stores including Galeries Lafayette in Paris and Bordeaux, alongside Apple, Louis Vuitton and Hermès locations.
President Emmanuel Macron said there was "no room for violence" and vowed that those who looted town halls and attacked businesses "will be prosecuted and punished," while facing criticism for attending a Céline Dion concert in Paris the night before. Saturday's marches united Yellow Vest activists and labor unions with high school students who have protested since September over teacher shortages and classroom conditions, widening unrest six months before France's presidential election.
