The movement continued into its fourth week despite emergency measures announced by the government, including a pledge to deploy 3,000 substitute teachers to schools with urgent staffing needs. Demonstrators said the measures had failed to address their concerns over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating buildings. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has promised a broader response by the end of October.
Riot police and demonstrators clashed in Paris, where protesters fired fireworks toward officers and police used tear gas. Around 7,000 people have been arrested during the unrest, and at least 24 schools have been burned or ransacked. Police tactics remain under scrutiny following serious injuries to teenagers, including a 15-year-old who lost a hand in Lens, after which France suspended stun grenade use at student demonstrations.
