Attackers allegedly linked to North Korea have also begun moving about 2,700 ZEC, worth $3.8 million, into Zcash’s Ironwood shielded pool, blockchain investigator ZachXBT said. About 18,900 ZEC, worth $28.3 million, was stolen in the hack. CEO Gracy Chen said Zcash losses were missed in the initial checks because it was a relatively small asset and blockchain on the platform.
Chen also disclosed that restarting wallet transfers to move remaining assets into cold wallets gave the attackers another opportunity, resulting in a second theft of about $30 million. “But we needed to do that, because there were far more than $30 million on the hot and the warm wallet that we needed to rescue,” she said. Bitget has replenished its user protection fund above $300 million and committed to covering customer losses regardless of whether stolen funds are recovered.
