About 50 US personnel recently joined Ecuadorean police in predawn raids to dismantle a cocaine ring linked to a Mexican cartel, marking the first time US troops have participated in such operations in Ecuador. Southern Command chief Gen. Francis Donovan confirmed that land strikes against drug cartels are now an available military option. This expansion of the US military role in Latin America and the Caribbean follows the initiation of strikes against drug-running boats one year ago.
