The escalation follows the total rupture of relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea on Oct. 1, when Addis Ababa shut its embassy in Asmara and expelled 10 Eritrean diplomats, including the Charge d'Affairs. Ethiopia cited national security threats and breaches of the Vienna Convention linked to renewed Tigray fighting. Eritrea severed all diplomatic ties in response, accusing Ethiopia of attempting to seize sovereign access to the sea and supporting armed opposition groups to trigger regime change. Both nations continue to trade accusations of stoking internal conflicts.
