A Ukrainian official said the overnight strike that sparked a fire at Russia's Ryazan refinery, about 200 kilometers south of Moscow, was carried out in response to Russian ballistic missile and drone attacks that violated the energy truce announced by US President Donald Trump. Ukrainian drones also reportedly hit the Borisoglebsk military airfield in Russia's Voronezh region, where six Su-34 aircraft were said to be damaged.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told the Financial Times that he ended a three day pause on refinery strikes after Russia launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones that cut power to more than 600,000 people. "The block [on attacking refineries] is out. We're done," Zelenskyy said, criticizing a withdrawal of US intelligence warnings ahead of the Russian strikes — which US officials blamed on "bad weather" — and restrictions on Starlink satellite internet service. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had said Wednesday that Russia was continuing to strike Ukrainian energy facilities because the scope of Trump's ceasefire was never specified.
