The market reacted sharply to the latest financial results from Caterpillar on Thursday, sending the manufacturer’s stock sliding as investors questioned the scale of the current boom in data center infrastructure. Shares plummeted as much as 12% at the open, even as the company posted a third quarter revenue of $20.68B, slightly above the $20.65B forecast by analysts, and an adjusted earnings per share of $7.20, compared with the $7.10 estimate.
The decline brought Caterpillar’s share price to a level 40% below its June peak, as market participants voiced concern over whether the AI-driven demand for power-generation equipment will remain durable. Despite the selloff, the company reported that its Power & Energy unit revenue rose 18% year over year to $8.8B, while its total revenue grew 17% to reach $20.7B for the period.
